Well, its finally time to get back into the swing of things to see if we can make this beast a nice riding horse.
Cassie and i worked in the arena today. She had been free longed a couple nights ago, and so today i started her from that point. Let her warm up without tack, and then proceeded to saddle her. She didn't seem to care at all.
We free longed some more with the saddle, and while she got quick and unbalanced, she did not buck or do anything snotty.
Then went about slapping the saddle with my hand, re-desensitizing her to noise back there. sent her back and forth a few times, and then we walked and trotted in hand. did some neck bending from the ground (i stand near the saddle).
Cooled out and all was good. No spooking, no nothing. Its hard to tell if she's really OK or if she was tuned out. She was licking and chewing and all that, but couldn't quite tell if she was really OK with it all.
I think my biggest concern was how she sort of reminded me of Salsa when she was first being worked with. Salsa had this beautiful movement where she'd rock back on her hinds and reach forward...as opposed to the normal green horse on the forehand type movement. Cassie was sort of rocked back too. So, was she really, truly, going forward? I have my doubts.
I'm wondering if she's a little less honest than Salsa- the silver lining about Salsa was that you'd know how she felt...Cassie sort of checks out... To date, she has never actually exploded. But I kind of feel like the potential for explosion is there, under all that skin and fat, LOL. How do I tap it while I am safely put on the ground? I don't want to experience it while under saddle. Or is it all in my head? I dont know.
Not so much fun to work with!
