Ahhh Arctic Blast 2008...LOL
Ponies are all cozied up in their heavier coats, ready to brave our blast of cold weather. Lots of hay in front of their faces, and a yummy mash tonight.
They also have 30 day supply of their dinners, all bagged up and in their trash bins for storage.
Why bag grain, you ask? Cuz I'm a supplement 'ho.
Cabo's Dinner, in addition to hay:
2 lbs alfalfa pellets .5 lb whole oats 1/2 cup flaxseed 2 oz Diamond V Yeast Equipride vitamin Selenium Yeast MSM Remission B1
And Cassie
2.5 lbs alfalfa pellets 1.5 lb whole oats 1/2 cup flaxseed 2 oz Diamond V Yeast Equipride vitamin Selenium Yeast MSM Remission B1
OK that was exhausting. So was bagging it all up.
In the morning they get 1 qt dry (soaked overnight) beetpulp with some rice bran and .5 lbs alfalfa pellets.
Yuuuuum.

Ugh, I hate winter. The great thing about having a small car is the gas mileage. The worst thing is performance in winter weather. Pretty much rendered useless when there is ice or snow on the road. Thankfully that doesnt happen often in Seattle...but the few times a year it does, what a pain!!
We were iced in all Sunday until about 3pm when we managed to get the Pathfinder out on the road. Wind up in Monroe was awful...horses stayed in with hay. Cassie and Cabo both got their sheets on as well since they are close to the door, which is a bit more drafty. Electrolytes in a warm mash too, to encourage drinking. Water buckets NOT frozen...goody!
let them out to play in the arena for a bit- and boy were they scared of all the wind and drifting snow! at least they got to run around a bit, which tuckered them out and warmed them up too.
Had to leave quickly cuz it was getting dark and the roads started to ice up again.
Going to go out again today to check up on them- this time with my car (i think the roads are better). They went outside today, but i'm sure they are doing OK.

Yeah its nasty down my way too. I am supposed to head up to West Seattle to help my Grandma out but I dont for see that happening this week, unless the roads clear up a bit. I dont drive in snow or ice unless I have to. I am so thankful I have Ally at a full care barn. But she is out in a pasture so she doesnt have a nice warm cozy stall to hide in, but does have a warm blanket on. A good way to keep horses water from freezing is to put mineral salt in the water. I used to get loose 50 pound bag of salt at Rebers and put a bunch in the water. Never had a frozen bucket or my horse not drink during winter. I may do that with Ally as soon as I can get to the store and then the barn. Have to go up and down 2 hills to get to the barn. Dont think my mini van can make it right now!

well, double blankets are a success. they are quite cozy under them. And Cabo doesn't have to show the world that he can wear faded purple hand-me-downs, LOL. His green Big D is a manly cover-up! ;D
Also, they might be getting too much hay cuz they both made a nest and slept in it last nite. Oy.
